Eventually, every kid asks this -- usually right when you're not prepared for it. Here's how most parents handle it.
A few approaches, depending on your child's age

For younger kids: lean into the story -- "he's magic, like Santa, and the magic only works if we believe in it." Most young kids accept this easily and happily.

For older, more skeptical kids: it's okay to shift the framing from "is he literally real" to "the tradition is real, and it's something our family does together for fun" -- this respects their growing critical thinking without a harsh "no, it's fake."

If they ask directly and you don't want to lie outright: you can say something like "what do you think?" and let them lead -- a lot of kids who suspect the truth aren't actually ready to fully let go of the magic yet, and asking back gives them room to choose.
There's no universally "correct" answer here -- it depends on your kid, your family's values around make-believe, and how big a deal it feels like in the moment. What matters more than the exact words is staying calm and warm about it, not treating the question like a crisis.
